Global Fastener Market Outlook: Strong September Data Point to Continued Industrial Momentum
The latest Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) points to a strong September for the North American fastener distribution market, with demand, sales and employment all showing notable improvement. At the same time, tighter supplier capacity and lean customer inventories highlight the continuing challenges facing the fastener supply chain.
According to the September 2026 FDI report from R.W. Baird and FCH Sourcing Network, the seasonally adjusted FDI rose sharply to 66.6, up from 58.3 in August. This was the index’s 17th consecutive month above 50, the level that separates expansion from contraction, and its highest reading since July 2018. On an unadjusted basis, the FDI reached 63.0, its strongest level since May 2021.
Sales Growth Strengthens
Sales were one of the strongest components of the September results. The seasonally adjusted sales index jumped to 91.5, compared with 63.8 in August, marking a record high for the indicator. The improvement was also visible in the distribution of responses: only 4% of respondents reported sales below seasonal expectations, while 59% reported above-seasonal activity.
The results suggest that demand across parts of the industrial fastener market remained resilient as the third quarter came to a close. Survey participants pointed to new business opportunities, capacity expansion and continued demand from sectors such as data centers and construction.
The broader manufacturing environment also remained positive. The U.S. ISM Manufacturing PMI stood at 54.5 in September, its ninth consecutive month above 50, indicating continued expansion in manufacturing activity.
Strong Demand Is Putting Pressure on Supply
While demand strengthened, the supply side showed signs of increasing pressure.
The supplier deliveries index rose to 75.9 in September from 69.0 in August. In the FDI methodology, a higher reading indicates slower supplier deliveries. According to the report, 56% of respondents experienced slower lead times or deliveries, up from 41% in August. The report linked the trend to vendor capacity constraints and ongoing supply-chain pressures.
Customer inventories also remained low. The customer inventory index fell to 35.2, marking its ninth consecutive month below 50 and its lowest level since mid-2022. Thirty percent of respondents considered customer inventories too low, while none described them as too high.
Together, these figures point to an interesting market dynamic: demand is strengthening while available supply and customer inventories remain relatively tight. For manufacturers, distributors and buyers, this places greater importance on production capacity, delivery reliability and supply-chain planning.
Industry Outlook Improves
The positive momentum was also reflected in expectations for the coming months.
The FDI’s Forward-Looking Indicator (FLI) increased to 63.6 in September from 56.9 in August, reaching its highest level since March 2022. Looking six months ahead, 44% of respondents expected activity to increase, while 48% expected activity to remain at a similar level. Only 7% anticipated lower activity.
This suggests that, despite continuing uncertainty around tariffs, freight costs and supply constraints, industry participants remain relatively confident about the near-term business environment.
What the Latest Data Mean for Fastener Sourcing
The September figures highlight several trends that are relevant to the wider fastener industry.
First, resilient industrial demand continues to support fastener consumption across multiple applications. Second, supply-side constraints remain an important consideration, particularly when demand increases faster than available production capacity. Third, lower customer inventories may encourage buyers to pay greater attention to supplier reliability and delivery lead times.
For international buyers, these conditions reinforce the importance of maintaining diversified supplier networks and establishing direct connections with manufacturers capable of providing consistent quality, competitive production capacity and dependable delivery.
As global manufacturing continues to evolve, international trade shows remain an important meeting point for manufacturers, distributors and professional buyers looking to identify new suppliers, explore emerging technologies and strengthen supply-chain connections.
Against this backdrop, International Fastener Show China 2027 will bring together fastener manufacturers, equipment suppliers, distributors and industry professionals in Shanghai, providing an international platform for sourcing, business networking and industry exchange.
