Thailand Pauses 166 Data Center Projects as AI Infrastructure Enters a New Stage
As artificial intelligence and the digital economy continue to expand, Thailand has attracted significant investment in data centers. However, the government is now taking a closer look at the rapid growth of the sector.
In September 2026, Thailand temporarily suspended 166 data center projects, including 49 projects already under construction and another 117 awaiting approval. The government plans to further assess their impact on electricity, water resources, land use, security and the environment, while developing more comprehensive standards for future projects.
AI Infrastructure Remains a Key Investment Area
The temporary suspension does not necessarily indicate a slowdown in Thailand’s digital development. Instead, the government aims to ensure that data center expansion is supported by sufficient infrastructure and generates sustainable long-term economic value.
As critical infrastructure for AI and digital services, data centers require significant amounts of electricity, cooling systems, mechanical and electrical equipment, steel structures and engineering support. Their development therefore creates demand across a much broader industrial supply chain beyond IT equipment.
Data Centers Drive Demand for Industrial Products
Large-scale data center projects typically require power systems, cooling and ventilation equipment, racks and support structures, as well as construction, metalworking, industrial equipment and installation systems.
These applications involve a wide range of industrial hardware and connection products, including bolts, nuts, washers, anchors, brackets and other specialized fastening systems. Some equipment may also require high-strength, corrosion-resistant and long-term reliable fastening solutions.
This means that companies do not necessarily need to be directly involved in data center construction to benefit from the sector’s growth. Suppliers of equipment, components, industrial hardware and engineering services can also become part of the wider supply chain.
Looking Beyond Data Centers: New Opportunities for Industrial Suppliers
Thailand’s review of data center projects also reflects a broader shift from simply pursuing investment volume toward improving infrastructure capacity and long-term industrial value.
For suppliers of fasteners, industrial hardware, machinery, metalworking products and engineering solutions, AI infrastructure remains an emerging application area worth monitoring.
As Thailand continues to develop its digital infrastructure, demand for industrial suppliers is likely to remain an important part of the wider ecosystem, creating potential opportunities for companies seeking to expand into Thailand and the broader ASEAN market.
Thailand Fasteners & Hardware Tools Exhibition 2026
The growth of AI and digital infrastructure is also creating new application opportunities for fasteners, industrial hardware, machinery and engineering suppliers.
Thailand Fasteners & Hardware Tools Exhibition 2026 will be held on December 3–4, 2026, at IMPACT Exhibition Center, Bangkok. Covering a total exhibition area of 6,000 m², the event will bring together 200+ exhibitors and 8,000+ professional visitors, covering fasteners, hardware and electromechanical products.
For suppliers looking to expand into Thailand and the ASEAN industrial market, the exhibition provides an opportunity to connect with professional buyers, manufacturers and supply chain companies, while exploring new applications and potential business partnerships.
